A Prayer for Protection

Pray this out loud if you can. Pause wherever something stirs in you, and let the Scriptures settle deep into you.

Father, I ask that You would bless me and those of whom I love and care for in this day. That You would bless us with the knowledge of the plans You have for us. That You would bless us with the opening of our scroll, the scroll of our life as recorded in heaven, that we would know and fulfill it.

Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Psalm 139:16 · NIV

Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—I have come to do your will, my God.’

Hebrews 10:7 · NIV

Let us seek not only the blessings and peace You have for us, but let us pick up the weapons of warfare that You have laid at our feet to be used to fight with. To win the war we are placed in.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

2 Corinthians 10:3–5 · KJV

That You would bless us with all truth and revelation. That we will know what our scroll says, and we ask that You would equip us to fulfill everything that is in our scroll. That You would place our feet on the path that You have designated for us. And that You would cause us to walk in the spaces You have ordained for us. To claim as ours in Your mighty name.

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.

Jeremiah 33:3 · NIV

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5–6 · NIV

That You would show us how to defend the defenseless, how to stand in the gap for ourselves and others. Teach me Your might. Teach me Your strength. Show me Your heart. Make Yourself alive and fully known to me that I may follow You in that fullness.

And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.

Ezekiel 22:30 · KJV

Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.

Psalm 82:3–4 · KJV

Lord, I ask that You would send Your angels to protect and defend myself and those whom I love. That they would work in my behalf in both this realm and all others. That I would learn to know them and trust their assistance and the role that You have placed for them in my life.

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

Psalm 91:11 · KJV

The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.

Psalm 34:7 · NIV

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

Hebrews 1:14 · NIV

I ask for the revelation, the full revelation of the fight that is happening in the spirit realm, and that all heavenly creations and beings, angels and all others would assist me as is in Your plan.

Open my eyes, open my heart and allow me to understand this full revelation, that I would walk swiftly with my scroll imprinted on my heart.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Ephesians 6:10–18 · NIV

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Jeremiah 31:33 · ESV

For time is short and yet days feel long. But I know and trust that You are coming back for me. For each one of us to take us up with You into Your glory, to fill all the promises that were written even in Your own scroll by Your Father. The Father through Your blood that has grafted us into being His children as well.

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 · NKJV

Thank You, Jesus. Thank You, Jesus. Thank You, Jesus.

A One-Minute Prayer for Protection

For the moments when you need to cover yourself and those you love quickly.

Father, bless me and those I love today. Open the scroll You have written for my life, and help me to know it and fulfill it. Teach me to pick up the weapons You have laid at my feet, and to stand in the gap for myself and for others. Send Your angels to protect and defend us, in this realm and all others. Open my eyes to the fight that is happening in the spirit realm, and let me walk with my scroll imprinted on my heart. I know that You are coming back for me. Thank You, Jesus. Amen.

Praying Psalm 91

For generations, believers have prayed Psalm 91 as a prayer of protection.

Lord, You are my refuge and my fortress. My God, in You I will trust. Cover me with Your feathers, and let me find shelter under Your wings. I will not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, because You have given Your angels charge over me, to keep me in all my ways. Amen.

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

Psalm 91:1–2 · KJV

Prayers of Protection for Family, Home, Travel and Night

A prayer of protection over my family

Lord, I place my family in Your hands today. Put a hedge of protection around each one of them, their bodies, their minds and their hearts. May You go with them. Keep them close to You and bring them home safely. Amen.

Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side?

Job 1:10 · NKJV

A prayer of protection over my home

Father, I dedicate this home to You. Let Your peace rest in every room. Let nothing enter here that does not come from You. May everyone who lives here and everyone who comes to visit bring nothing with them and take nothing with them, except the wonderful things of God. Amen.

Unless the LORD builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the LORD protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good.

Psalm 127:1 · NLT

A prayer of protection for travel

Lord, watch over my going out and my coming in today. Keep me safe on every road, and give Your angels charge over our route. Guard those who travel with me and around me, and bring us safely to where we are going. Amen.

The LORD keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever.

Psalm 121:8 · NLT

A prayer of protection at night

Father, as I lie down tonight, may I be in Your Rest. Guard my sleep and my dreams, and keep watch over this house. I have no reason to fear, because You neither slumber nor sleep. Amen.

I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

Psalm 4:8 · NKJV

The Full Armor of God

Paul describes six pieces of armor God gives His people. Put them on, one by one, as you pray.

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Ephesians 6:11 · KJV

The belt of truth

Stand in what God says is true, not in the lies that have been spoken over you.

Your heart is guarded by His righteousness, not by your own effort.

How to Pray for Protection

Five steps you can take into any day.

1. Begin with who He is

Recognize and acknowledge God as your refuge and your fortress before you name what you need.

2. Name who you are covering

Pray by name for yourself, your family, your home, your work or your travels.

3. Put on the armor

Pray over each piece of the armor of God and receive it.

4. Speak His Word

If you are not sure what to pray, pray Scripture. Speak it out loud over your situation. His Word is your sword.

5. Rest in His care

Leave it in His hands and walk into your day in peace.

Questions People Ask

If you are new to praying for protection, welcome.

What is an effective prayer for protection?

Many believers turn to Psalm 91, and the prayer on this page draws on it and on Ephesians 6. The power is in the One who hears our prayers, who knows our hearts, what we are asking for and why. An honest prayer to God is enough.

What does the Bible say about God’s protection?

Scripture calls God our refuge and strength, “a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1), and promises that “the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one” (2 Thessalonians 3:3, NKJV).

How do I pray a hedge of protection?

The phrase comes from Job 1:10, where God had “made an hedge about him, and about his house.” Ask God to surround you and those you love on every side, and name each person and place you are placing in His care.

Can I pray for protection over someone else?

Yes. Praying for others is called intercession, or standing in the gap (Ezekiel 22:30). You can pray this prayer over your children, your spouse, your friends or anyone God puts on your heart.

Can I print this prayer?

Yes. The printable PDF is free to download. Keep it where you will see it daily.
