When the Enemy Wears Your Face
Recognizing counterfeits in dreams, visions, and the voice you think you know
A woman I had been walking with in ministry came to me carrying something heavy. She had dreamed about me.
In the dream, she was being hurt. I was standing there watching — didn't move toward her, didn't speak, didn't lift a hand. When she looked at me, my face was empty. And the dream carried a message with it, the way dreams do, a knowing that settled in before she was fully awake. She doesn't actually care about you. She has been lying to you this whole time.
She woke up shaking. And then she did something brave — she brought it to me instead of quietly backing away.
I asked her to walk me through it slowly. What did the room look like. What was I wearing.
She thought about it and said, "You had on a pink pantsuit, pink shirt and pink shoes. All a bit mismatching"
I don't wear pink. I never have. It is not in my closet, has not been in thirty years, and anyone who knows me well, knows that.
There it was. The tell.
Here is something I wish we recognized more plainly: our enemy does not fight fair, and never intended to.
“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”
—1 PETER 5:8, KJV
Devour. Not debate. Not challenge. He has no interest in a fair outcome. He wants you consumed.
And Jesus, who never spoke carelessly, told us exactly what He is:
“He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
—JOHN 8:44, KJV
Read that again. There is no truth in him. Not a little. Not sometimes. Lying is not a tactic he reaches for when cornered — it is his native tongue, what he speaks of his own.
So when we expect anything from him resembling honor, we have already handed him the advantage. He will not always identify himself. He will not fight in open view.
He will, however, tell you who he wants you to think he is.
“And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”
—2 CORINTHIANS 11:14, KJV
Paul is not describing something rare. He is describing standard operating procedure. The enemy will always present himself in whatever form gives him the most access to you.
If light gets him in the door, he comes as light. If your pastor's face gets him in, he wears your pastor's face. If a rescuer gets him in — and for some of you, a rescuer is the only thing that ever would — he comes as a rescuer.
He dresses for the occasion.
Think about how much work he saves himself.
If he comes at you as something obviously dark, you resist. You pray. You call someone. Your whole spirit stands up and says no.
But if he wears the face of the person who has been praying for you — the one sitting with you in the hardest season of your life, whose voice you have learned to trust?
Now he doesn't have to overpower your discernment. He gets to borrow it.
And the damage is far more efficient. He doesn't just plant a lie; he severs a relationship. He isolates you from the person God placed in your path for this season — and he does it without showing his face, so you never think to fight him. You think you're being wise about her.
That is what grieves me most. The woman in that dream wasn't foolish — she was careful. Everything in her was doing the right thing with the wrong information. She had received what felt like revelation, and revelation is meant to be acted on.
That is precisely why it works. The counterfeit arrives dressed as discernment.
This has happened before — people in the middle of real breakthrough, shaken by a dream where something wearing my face stood by while they were harmed. And underneath it, always the same message: She doesn't care. She's not who you think. You are alone.
It is not creative. It is relentless.
Sometimes he doesn't come as someone you trust to break trust. Sometimes he comes as a rescuer to build it.
I have sat with people who described a figure arriving in a moment of terror, reaching out a hand, pulling them out. They woke flooded with relief, certain something holy had finally come for them.
And then the rescue led somewhere. It always leads somewhere — a relationship that should never have been entered, an agreement that opened a door, a slow drift into teaching that sounds beautiful and lands nowhere near Jesus. The rescue was bait. Building trust was the point.
He is not above being kind to you if kindness is the fastest route to your destruction. There is no floor beneath him. There is no line he arrives at and says, no, that would be too far.
I want to move carefully here, because for some of you this is not theoretical.
The enemy does this to Jesus Christ Himself.
In deliverance and inner-healing work, particularly with people carrying fractures from severe or repeated trauma, I have watched the same thing surface again and again. A part of them — often a very young part, holding a memory the rest of them could not carry — has met a "Jesus."
And that Jesus watched. He stood in the corner of the room while the abuse happened. He did not intervene. He did not speak. When that child cried out, He said nothing. Sometimes He turned away. Sometimes he even was the face of the abuser.
I need you to hear what that does to a person, because it is not incidental. It is engineering.
If you can convince a child in the middle of harm that God Himself is present and unwilling to help, you accomplish several things at once. You remove the point of crying out. You remove the hope of rescue. You remove the effort to escape — because why struggle against something God is standing right there permitting?
And you lay the foundation for the lie the enemy will come back for later: He watched and did nothing. I am the one who helped you. He is the liar. I am the savior.
That is the inversion he has wanted since before the garden, and he is willing to use a child's worst moment to sell it.
If something just went still inside you — if you recognize that room — I want to say two things gently. What you met was not Him. And this is not work to do alone. Bring it into the light with someone who knows how to walk you through it. There is real healing on the other side. But it is walked through with people, not around them.
Here is what I have come to trust.
The enemy cannot do a perfect impersonation. A convincing one, yes. Never a perfect one.
Something is always off.
It might be a pink pantsuit. A phrase the real person would never use. A coldness that doesn't match. Sometimes people describe the eyes being wrong — present but empty, or fixed in a way the real person's never are. Sometimes the figure never says the name of Jesus, or subtly steers around it. Sometimes there is a strange absence of something that should be there: no warmth, no smile, no connection.
And often it is simply that the message contradicts the character. The person in the dream is doing something the actual person has never in their life done.
The enemy is a created being, he is not omniscient and he is not the author of anything. Everything he does is derivative, and derivative work always has a seam if you look closely enough.
This is exactly why Scripture tells us to look.
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”
—1 JOHN 4:1, KJV
Try the spirits. That is not suspicion and it is not a lack of faith — it is obedience. The assumption baked into that verse is that things will come to you presenting as God which are not God, and you are expected to check.
“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”
—HEBREWS 5:14, KJV
By reason of use. Discernment does not arrive fully formed in a box. It is a muscle, built the way muscles are built — through use, through repetition, through getting it wrong sometimes and learning the difference.
And notice what Jesus calls a blessing:
“But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.”
—MATTHEW 13:16, KJV
Eyes that see. Ears that hear. He does not say blessed are those who never encounter a lie. He says blessed are the ones who can tell. That is not a promise of a life without counterfeits — it is a promise that you can be equipped to recognize them.
So here is the practical piece for you to remember.
When you are seeing something in the spirit and are not certain what you're looking at — when something presents as a person you know, or an angel, or the Lord Himself, and something feels even slightly off — you say this:
"Show your true identity right now, in the name of Jesus Christ."
And it has to.
It cannot hold the costume under direct command in the authority of Christ. It will shift, it will drop, sometimes it flees outright. I have had people describe the mask coming off so fast it startled them awake.
And if what you are looking at is of God? Nothing is lost. He is not offended by being asked, and He has never once been threatened by a question. The real thing does not flinch under examination — only the counterfeit needs you not to look closely.
I would rather ask a hundred times and be wrong ninety-nine than accept one thing wearing a false face.
I want to ask you something, and I'd like you to sit with it rather than answer quickly.
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
—JOHN 10:27, KJV
We quote that constantly. But look at what Jesus says just before it — the part we skip:
“And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.”
—JOHN 10:4–5, KJV
They know the stranger's voice by knowing the shepherd's. Not by studying strangers. By knowing Him.
So, honestly:
Do you hear His voice? Not could you. Do you, regularly, know when He is speaking?
Are you sure it's His? How sure? What are you comparing it against?
How do you discern? Do you have an actual practice, or are you going on feeling?
Has a fake ever shown up to deceive you? Sit with that one. A dream that turned you against someone. A "word" that arrived with a chill instead of peace. A rescue that led somewhere you should never have gone.
And has a fake of you ever shown up to deceive someone else? This is the question almost nobody asks, and if you are in any kind of ministry, teaching, mentoring, or spiritual leadership, you should be asking it. Somebody may right now be carrying a dream about you that never happened, and quietly building a wall you cannot see. You may not find out for years. You may never find out.
You do not have to know the specifics to address it. You will see why in a moment.
Because here is what I have to say plainly: you cannot recognize a counterfeit of a voice you only hear occasionally.
Bank tellers learn to spot counterfeit currency by handling the real thing until a fake feels wrong in their fingers before their mind catches up. Familiarity with the genuine. That is the whole method.
If your communion with the Lord is sporadic — a prayer when things are hard, a service on Sunday, a verse when you remember — you will not feel the seam. Not because you lack the gift, but because you lack the reps.
The best protection against a counterfeit Jesus is a well-worn relationship with the real One. Daily. Ordinary. Unhurried. The kind where you know how He talks to you, the particular tenderness of it, the way He corrects — never with contempt, never with condemnation, and never with that flat cold silence the counterfeit specializes in.
“For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.”
—1 CORINTHIANS 14:33, KJV
“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.”
—HEBREWS 13:8, KJV
He does not change on you. He does not go cold. He does not stand in the corner and watch your pain.
Recognizing a counterfeit is only half of it. You also have authority to do something, and most believers never use it.
I approach this in the Heavenly courtroom.
“I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit... thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.”
—DANIEL 7:9–10, KJV
There is a court, it is seated, and we can take our adversary there to be judged by the Lord.
The framework I use draws from Robert Henderson and Francis Myles teaching on the Courts of Heaven, and I'd encourage you to read them directly. Here is how I walk it when a counterfeit has been operating — whether something impersonated me, or impersonated the Lord to someone I'm walking with. And note this: you can file it without knowing a single name. You are not required to have the details before you can ask the Judge to rule.
I have witnessed this process bear fruit. Relationships restored that looked finished. People who came back weeks later to say the dreams had stopped. One woman told me the fake showed up again — and this time she looked straight at it and said show your true identity right now. It left and never came back. Other times, the person was able to perceive the “tell” and recognize it as a fake, commanding it to leave and not come back.
The enemy is a liar with no honor and no floor. He will wear the face of someone who loves you. He will wear the face of a rescuer. He will wear the face of Jesus Christ Himself and stand silent in the worst room of your life to convince you God does not care.
But he cannot do it perfectly. There is always a seam. There is always a tell.
You have been given eyes to see, a command to test what comes, a question that forces the reveal, and a seat in a courtroom where the Judge is your Father and the case has already been answered by the blood of His Son.
Use all of it.
And if something has been wearing your face — or if something wearing His face has been lying to you for a very long time — you do not have to leave it standing.
Take it to court.
